Jay-Z Mixtapes – The Early Years
Today, Jay-Z is easily one of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, having been successful as both a hip hop artist, producer, clothing designer and club owner. However, everyone starts somewhere, and Jay-Z mixtapes were a big part of his success at the beginning. His perseverance helped him get by rough beginnings to become one of the biggest superstars in the world.
Like many people in the hip hop music industry, Jay-Z has made a name for himself by writing songs that are largely based on his own life. Growing up in the projects of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Jay-Z had a difficult childhood that included everything from selling crack-cocaine to shooting his brother in the arm when he was just twelve years old. However, the experiences gave him the material he needed to get a great start writing music that related to his life.
While he was shopping around for a record deal, several Jay-Z mixtapes were released. This allowed music fans to get a taste of his sound already though he did not however have an album for them to buy. He found, like many up and coming artists, that rap mixtapes were a great way to get exposure and make connections in the industry.
After searching for quite a while, Jay-Z could not find a major label that was interested in signing him. He finally took matters into his own hands and started Roc-A-Fella Records on his own. It was with his own label that Jay-Z released his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, which featured DJ Premier, Super DJ Clark Kent and already an turn up by The Notorious B.I.G.
Jay-Z mixtapes helped the rapper get the attention he needed to make a splash with his debut album. Since he had already released songs that attained attention, he was able to have major players in the industry participate in his debut project. It was the beginning of a long and successful career in the rap industry.
